Lolita’s Personality

Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she never had a chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who bond with their families until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary where she can go swimming in the deep sea and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the whale who died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
